Power Star Pawan Kalyan has hit the screens today with ‘Panjaa’. The movie has been directed by Tamil Director Vishnuvardhan and music has been composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Shobhu Yarlagadda and Neelima Thirumalasetty have produced the movie jointly. Let us see how the movie stacks up.
Story:
Jaidev ( Pawan Kalyan ) is an accomplished hitman and he is the most trusted aide of Bhagawan (Jackie Shroff ), who is the supreme Don of Kolkata. They share a business rivalry with Kulkarni (Atul Kulkarni),who aims to overthrow Bhagawan as the Don. Things are smooth until Bhagwan’s son Munna (Adivi Sesh) returns back to India. He is a psychotic and highly impulsive character and his behaviour creates problems for everyone. He has his eyes on club dancer Jahnavi (Anjali Lavania) but she rejects him as she adores Jaidev.
Jaidev meanwhile comes across Sandhya (Sarah Jane Dias), who is a soft spoken environmentalist and tree lover. A mutual admiration for each other leads to a romantic involvement between the two. Munna meanwhile, continues to go crazy about Jahnavi and a tragedy ensues.
Jaidev is forced to decide whether to retaliate or leave Kolkata completely. He chooses to leave out of loyalty to Bhagawan and heads to Palasa, the village of Sandhya. He comes across S.I.Paparayudu (Brahmanandam) and he solves the problems of the village by cleverly using Paparayudu.
Bhagawan on the other hand, cannot rest until he seeks out Jai for revenge. What happens eventually and whether Jai decides to fight back forms the rest of the story.
Plus Points :
First half of the movie is good with decent comedy and the film moves along at a fairly rapid pace. The interval block has been shaped up superbly. Pawan Kalyan looks superb in the movie and he has delivered a very fine performance as Jaidev. He is restrained and composed. The trademark Pawan Kalyan mannerisms and energy will not be there as the script does not allow it.
Sarah Jane Dias is good in the role of Sandhya. She has delivered a good performance. She shares a lovely screen chemistry with Pawan Kalyan and the romantic track is good to watch.
Anjali Lavania sizzles in her role and she looks seductive in the item song. Adivi Sesh has turned in a commendable performance as the psychotic and impulsive Munna. Jackie Shroff is ok. Brahmanandam rocks as S.I. Paparayudu. His moments with Pawan Kalyan are hilarious.
Paruchuri Venkateshwara Rao and Tanikella Bharani are decent as the associates of Bhagawan. Ali is good as Chotu, the associate of Pawan Kalyan in Kolkata. Jhansi and Subbaraju are ok as Sandhya’s family members.
Cinematography is top notch and fight sequences are terrific (More on them in technical section). All the songs have been shot extremely stylishly.
Minus Points :
The movie has very little to offer in terms of commercial elements one expects from a Pawan Kalyan film. Fans will be disappointed as their favourite hero does not exhibit his trademark mannerisms or energy.
The screenplay is slightly slow in the second half and save for Brahmanandam’s episode, will not be appreciated by everyone. The plot is wafer thin and does not offer much scope for the director to come up with engaging sequences.
The amount of effort that went into making a stylish and sleek film should have been invested in the script and story as well. There are a lot of philosophical moments of reflection in the movie that will not be understood by the common man and by people in B and C centers.
Technical Aspects :
Cinematography is extremely good. The camera angles, the lighting and the way the scenes have been mounted are very fresh. Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score is good. Editing is decent. Dialogues are pretty well written, though they lack commercial value. There are no masala or punch dialogues in the movie. They are very subtle and polished.
Fights have been choreographed extremely well. I can confidently say that they are some of the best and most stylish fight sequences seen in Telugu movies so far.
Verdict:
Panjaa is a stylish and sleek film that will probably not be enjoyed by Pawan fans. Regular moviegoers and non Pawan Kalyan fans will find the movie to be good. There are next to no commercial elements that people come to expect from Pawan Kalyan’s movies. But on the bright side, the stylish fight sequences, the subtle comedy and Pawan’s superbly restrained performance stand out in the movie. Brahmi’s episode is good. Watch it without expectations and you might enjoy the film.
